Seattle is The Fairy Tale City of Heroin and Home Invasion

In the Kloss house, fairy tales play a large part in our ethical instruction[1]. Fairy tales play a large part in the relating of truth: generation to generation and culture to culture. Good fairy tales echo the truth of God’s word. Really, what is the story of the bible if it isn’t, “slay the dragon – get the girl?” Therefore, St. George and the Dragon has been talked about a great deal with our five boys. “Boys… you’re either the self-indulgent, nasty dragon or you’re the brave knight saving the fair maiden (virtue, wisdom, sister, etc.).”

The fairy tale of the hour, not only for my boys, but for you and me as well, is the Emperor’s New Clothes. Seattle is that town. You mean because “In the great city where he lived, life was always gay.”[2] No…well yes…but…not that part. I think gay used to mean something else.

And neither am I referring to Seattle’s naked cycle ride on solstice or the poof parade. Those people know they are naked and long for us all to acknowledge it.

Seattle is the fairy tale town from the Emperor’s New Clothes. The story begins with a gay town and gay emperor and goes on to say that the effeminate emperor and all his fawning courtiers were too afraid to say he was naked, because they were told by the enterprising clothiers that the, “clothes made of this cloth had a wonderful way of becoming invisible to anyone who was unfit for his office, or who was unusually stupid.”[3] They were shamed into accepting lies as truth and bowed to the fear of man. No one had the courage to say the plain truth; the emperor is naked. It’s not until a small child finally has the good sense and moral fortitude to state the plain truth, “’but he hasn’t got anything on.’”[4]In the great PNW, much like in the emperor’s town, the fallacies are full frontal. What the emperor’s hiding under the garment is no longer the issue, we can all see the man boobs and pink socks. But we are told that only stupid people say there is no splendid regalia, only people unfit for their office say that he is naked; it is only stupid people who call a boy, a boy, without asking his preferred pronoun. Only people unfit for their office call abortion, murder or true masculinity, glorious.

There is a lot of cool shaming and fear manipulation going on. And the courageous act of our day is as simple as using a dictionary properly. Naked is naked, a boy is a boy. A fool is a fool.

Here in Seattle, this is how this is breaking down. Last year the esteemed city counsel of Seattle passed a tax on sugary drinks[5] because they are unhealthy. The same year, with support from the city of Seattle, the esteemed counsel of the county King announced it would be opening free clinics, so that doctors could assist junkies in shooting up.[6] So no sugar, it’s unhealthy, but here is a nice doctor who will help you inject opiates into your veins. Isn’t using heroin a felony?[7]Courtiers of culture: “Are you stupid? Its healthcare!”

I can’t even…..But, hey, if the state sanctions the murder of babies in wombs by doctors, what’s a few other state sanctioned felonies?

Then there is the occasion of the dismissed cases of so called, “quality of life,” crimes. Fifteen hundred to be exact. In unincorporated King County, or the suburbs, misdemeanor crimes were dismissed because of a lack of funds in the budget to hire more prosecutors. Officials then argue that the lack of funds is a result of the repressive restriction on the growth of property tax, which the state legislator passed. The county is saying they are too poor to fulfill one of its only biblical mandates – punishing the wrong doer. Too poor. The bi-annual county budget is 11.3 billion.[8] Doesn’t the emperor look splendid?

Why don’t they just do what Seattle is doing – unable to raise property taxes beyond the annual 1%, they are trying to push through an unconstitutional income tax.[9]But the question is, where is the County’s money going? How about the $2.25 million for an immigrant defense fund? MLK County tax payers are covering the cost of legal fees for foreigners,[10] while the county can’t pay to prosecute people who are trespassing and stealing in the suburbs. Poofdom would rather combat the president’s immigration policy than the actual criminals in the actual communities they are in place to protect.

Courtiers of culture: “Enforcing the written law is the real crime you racist, bigoted white privileged nincompoop! Only stupid people, unfit for office, call breaking the law a crime! Homelessness is a We are people of the Word of God and so we ought to be people of words. True words. Prophetic words. Bold and Godly words spoken in love. There are full frontal fallacies in the public square and there is a lot of pressure to kowtow to the courtiers of culture. To be polite, nice, gentle and apologetic. To call wickedness – righteousness. To call nakedness a splendid dress. To be good little boys who tell the emperor how amazing he looks.

Courtiers of culture: “Enforcing the written law is the real crime you racist, bigoted white privileged nincompoop! Only stupid people, unfit for office, call breaking the law a crime! Homelessness is a crime! Trump’s immigration policy is a crime!”

See what they did there. And then comes the fawning courtiers of cultural relevance applauding injustice as justice; the underwear as flowing robes of state.

We live in a culture where somehow the simplest words give us all kinds of trouble. That’s a girl, I can see it’s a girl. She is a girl.

Courtiers of culture: “No! You patriarchal pig! Genders are a social construct! Check that person’s preferred pronouns, you gender privileged despot! Celebrate women’s day!”

But if gender is a social construct…..

But we only have ourselves to blame. Long before the world struggled with the definition of the word “boy,” we struggled with simple words like “day” in Genesis 1. Long before Sally and Susan went to the altar, Jenny was already frocked and leading the service. Long before the world told us to stand up straight and tell the emperor how amazing he looks, we were told to sit up straight and stop drinking alcohol or smoking cigars or using “he” universally in our bibles. Long before the nanny state we had the nanny church.

While the bride of Christ was off in the corner somewhere getting in touch with her feminine side – relativism, socialism and money grubbing charlatans got a hold of the dictionary and have utterly neutered it and us. But we were willing victims.

Matthew 19:12 “For there are eunuchs who have been so from birth, and there are eunuchs who have been made eunuchs by men, and there are eunuchs who have made themselves eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. Let the one who is able to receive this receive it.” (ESV)

The effeminate and emasculated church stands around stammering, worrying about relevance, while the courtiers of culture rearrange the vocabulary for family, marriage, privacy, person, education, etc. In a day when being a man, especially a white man, is contrary to good social norms, the last thing the courtiers of culture want is us speaking out of turn.

The last thing they want is; a man calling Jesus King and bowing to no other, a man taking a wife while forsaking all others, the two becoming one flesh and loving their fruit; raising that fruit in the fear and admonition of the Lord. The last thing they want is anyone using a dictionary properly.

But Jesus encourages us and so too does Hans Christian Anderson. Read the classics people! Matthew 19:14 “but Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of heaven.” (ESV) and in a parallel passage Jesus says “be like the little children.”

“But he hasn’t got anything on,” a little child said. “Did you ever hear such innocent prattle?” said its father. And one person whispered to another what the child had said, “He hasn’t anything on. A child says he hasn’t anything on.” “But he hasn’t got anything on!” the whole town cried out at last.”[11]The whole sad charade is undone by a few words – truth. But in our enlightened days we don’t want to be accused of innocent prattle or the myriad of other adjectives used to mock and repress truth. The courtiers of culture will call speaking truth, lies. They don’t use words properly, so they will misapply all kinds of them in order to shut you up. And you are afraid of being called names, aren’t you?

They will call you a racist, a bigot, a homophobe, a misogynist, a glutton and drunkard. They will say you are unfit to parent, to do your vocation, to speak. They will call you stupid, backwards, ignorant, uneducated liars.

The fight is over words, and we should rejoice that it is still primarily a fight of words and not swords. But we know that the words of God are swords – a mighty weapon for tearing down strongholds. The good news is that we serve the one who speaks powerful words, who is the Word of God. And in His image the power of speaking is our birthright as children of the living God. To name. To speak. To proclaim.

We are people of the Word of God and so we ought to be people of words.

But we need the veracity and fortitude of the child, to say simply that the emperor is naked and unpleasant to the eyes and his courtiers are fools, liars and boot-licking rogues. The Word of God is our Lord and so Words matter. Don’t fear the emperor or the courtiers of culture, remember;

Isaiah 44:24–28 Thus says the LORD, your Redeemer, who formed you from the womb: “I am the LORD, who made all things, who alone stretched out the heavens, who spread out the earth by myself, who frustrates the signs of liars and makes fools of diviners, who turns wise men back and makes their knowledge foolish, who confirms the word of his servant and fulfills the counsel of his messengers, who says of Jerusalem, ‘She shall be inhabited, ’and of the cities of Judah, ‘They shall be built, and I will raise up their ruins’; who says to the deep, ‘Be dry; I will dry up your rivers’; who says of Cyrus, ‘He is my shepherd, and he shall fulfill all my purpose’; saying of Jerusalem, ‘She shall be built, ‘and of the temple, ‘Your foundation shall be laid.’”

The foundation has been laid. Christ is the stone on which we build. He is the Word of truth and in this wilderness in which we live, we need the Word; the way, the truth, the life and the resurrection.

We need to honor the king of kings as if he really were the LORD of the cosmos and our vocabulary, raising our boys as boys and our girls as girls, with God given callings. Worshiping Jesus together, loving our neighbors and enemies. We need words of compassion and confrontation and healing and hope.

If we tell the emperor and all his host how ridiculous they look and how absurd their notions of dress are…

If we start there, who knows where it might lead…
